Network Rail CP4 Switchgear
L.C. Switchgear are supplying Controlled Track Switches (CTS) for CP4, which were the same as the Controlled Track Switch (CTS) products used on the Power Supply Upgrade and the Channel Tunnel Reinforcement projects. These were Controlled Track Switches (CTS), have been in service for many years. These units are Network Rail Accepted products; refer to Railway Products details.
Manual and Motorised Track Isolating Switches & Motorised Changeover Switches specifically designed for Screw Pile Mounting have been jointly developed by LCS & Tube Lines. The pile mounting solution greatly reduces the installation cost which is the lions share of the overall cost of a switch to the railway.
In addition a number of tunnel switches were supplied to the P400 project with further requirements in 2014.
Midland Metro Substation switches
Substation 5A and 7 switchgear for the depot and fan upgrades to Wednesbury Depot were supplied by LCS in early 2013 with Substation 9 to follow at a later date.
London Underground upgrades its train depots at Ealing Common and Upminster
Work on Ealing Common is already underway and is first for completion in 2013, with the Upminster depot revamp expected to be completed by 2015.
LCS is providing the complete shore supply system from the Isolating and Changeover Supply Isolators, through the Road Contactor Suites, to Overhead Switchable Trolleys & Pedestals to the train. DDM Mimic Panels & Overhead Status Indicators provide feed-back to the DDM, operators and maintainers. EPO Emergency Power Off Panels marshal the emergency pushbuttons within the depot via ‘Safety Relays’ and safely remove power from roads in an emergency. This employs the LU approved products previously supplied to Stonebridge Park, Hainault, Northumberland Park, Ruislip, London Road, Waterloo & City, Neasden & Hammersmith.
Replacement Switches for Eurostar
Changeover Filter Switch for the TMST (Eurostar) rolling stock. These switches have lasted well beyond their design life in the arduous field of the Channel Tunnel. Replacements for these aging switches will be provided by LCS over the next 2 years.
London Underground Tube Lines P400 Power Supply Upgrade
LCS is just starting to supply manual off load / fault make Depot Switches and motorised and manual Tunnel Switches for the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly Lines. The products are based on the experience of the Tunnel Switches supplied for the Victoria Line Upgrade, Metropolitan Line Upgrade and the Jubilee Line Upgrade in the mid 90’s. The first deliveries will be for High Barnet, Edgeware followed by Cockfosters
More Conductor Rail Heating Panels for Network Rail
An additional 40 sets of Conductor Rail Heating have been supplied in 2013.
LCS have a Network Rail Approval PA05/04652/T for the Supply Panels which have been supplied in 2010, 2011 & 2012.
These projects should ensure that last year’s disruption of the railways due to snow and ice should be a thing of the past.

LCS developed and subsequently supplied a number of fully functioning remotely operated units to Network Rail. The control system ensures that there is no energy wasted heating the conductor rail when increased ambient temperature prevents the formation of ice and remote control was considered essential because of the dispersal of a large number of units throughout the south east of England, primarily to cover Sussex and Kent.
Thameslink – Ludgate Cellars
LCS designed Integrated Circuit Breaker Contactor & Motorised Isolator suites provided the automated changeover from DC to AC traction systems. This system ensures that the dual supply period is kept to a minimum to avoid stray current generation by the two power supplies.
The Thameslink is intended to have a greatly increased number of trains per hour through its new changeover at Ludgate Cellars (Blackfriars). To ensure that train movements are maintained there is a secondary Circuit Breaker, Contactor & Motorised Isolator suite.
A PLC System designed by LCS is used to sequence control and monitor the traction power systems. The system is used to seamlessly changeover to a hot standby secondary suite if a fault is detected. The PLC can ensure that this disruption is kept to a minimum thus saving considerable amounts cost due to downtime.
London Underground SSL Metropolitan Line Upgrade
LCS is currently supplying manual off load / fault Make Depot Switches and motorised and manual Tunnel Switches for the Metropolitan Line. The products are based on the experience of the Tunnel Switches supplied for the Victoria Line Upgrade and the Jubilee Line Upgrade in the mid 90’s. These tunnel switches are off load / fault make switches of compact design, constructed to meet the stringent London Underground Low Smoke Zero Halogen requirements and to fit into the narrow tunnels of the Metropolitan Line.
East London Line New Cross Depot Contactors and Buffer Zone
Road contactors provide the 750V DC supply to Trolleys & Pedestals (Supplied by others at New Cross) which provide the shore supply for the rolling stock. This project provided maintenance and stabling facilities for the East London Line fleet rolling stock at New Cross. At New Cross Depot the requirements for train movements from an Earthed Traction System for a Wheel Lathe Road to a Traction Negative Traction System involved switching the supplies to a Buffer Zone between the two. This is achieved by a set of four 2 Pole Contactors, controlled from a Buffer Zone Control Panel which interfaces with the Wheel Lathe and Mule.
East London Line AC DC Test Track & Road configuration and isolation for New Cross Depot
The East London Line required reliable switchgear with a proven track record for its AC/DC Test track and power configuration of the roads at New Cross Depot. L.C. Switchgear supplied products which were the same as products used on the Power Supply Upgrade. These were Controlled Track Switches (CTS), Bonding Devices (BD) & LCS2 Supply Disconnectors which have been in service for many years on other projects.
North London Line
In conjunction with the works leading up to the 2012 Olympic Games, the North London Line from Willesden High Level to Stratford via Gospel Oak, is being upgraded with enhancements to the Signalling, Permanent Way, Civil Engineering and Telecommunications systems. As part of these works a large section of the third rail system was recovered, this was the result of an isolating section at Primrose Hill junction. The old traction power arrangement between Wembley Mainline SCC and Camden Road Junction SB employed dual electrification. This comprised of 25KV AC overhead line electrification and 750V DC third rail electrification.
As part of the works implemented at Stage 1 & 2, a large area of the third rail system was recovered. As a result of the recovery of the third rail traction supply East of Primrose Hill junction an Isolating Section (to provide protection against stray DC current) was provided using LCS switchgear products. The project comprised of Ten Spark Gap Resistor Assemblies, Four 2 Pole Contactor & Manual Isolator panels and Two Return Current Isolators.
LCS provided the maintenance and 4 hour response cover for the Controlled Track Switches (Mk3) (CTS) and the LCS2 Supply Disconnectors and the Road Contactor Suites.
This ensures depot ‘uptime’ in the maintenance and stabling facilities for the Southern fleet of Electrostar rolling stock at Brighton, Selhurst, Streatham, Littlehampton and Bognor.
London Underground Victoria Line Upgrade VLU
LCS has recently completed an order to supply motorised and manual Tunnel Switches for the VLU. The products are an updated derivative of the Tunnel Switches supplied for the Jubilee Line in the mid 90’s. These are off load / fault make switches of an extremely compact design to fit into the narrow tunnels of the Victoria Line. These also meet the very stringent Low Smoke Zero Halogen requirements of London Underground. Also included in the project are a number of on load Depot Switches and Changeover Switches.
Metronet BCV DEISIP Project
The Depot improvement scheme required the co-ordinated use of switchgear to provide a totally safe solution to Road Switching and Train Stabling whilst ensuring maximum train movements on London Underground routes.
LCS provided the complete shore supply system from the Isolating and Changeover Supply Isolators, through the Road Contactor Suites, to Overhead Switchable Trolleys & Pedestals to the train. DDM Mimic Panels & Overhead Status Indicators provide feed-back to the DDM, operators and maintainers.
Ashford Buffer Zone Switchgear
At Ashford the requirements for train movements from an Earthed Traction System to a Traction Negative Traction System involved switching the supplies to a Buffer Zone between the two. This is achieved by a set of 2 Pole Contactors in an automated set, supported by a manual on load set of 2 pole Switches. The manual Switchgear was an essential requirement of the project to ensure train movements during contactor servicing or in case of faults.
Network Rail Power Supply Upgrade
The power supply upgrade required reliable equipment with a proven track record.
L.C. Switchgear supplied products which were the same as or based on products used on the Channel Tunnel Line Reinforcement. These were Controlled Track Switches (CTS), DC Disconnector Switches (DCDS) & LCS2 Supply Disconnectors which have been in service for many years. These units are Network Rail Accepted products; refer to Railway Products section for details. Ongoing power supply reviews ensure that the equipment is still being upgraded on the Network Rail system.
Southern Depot Improvement
LCS provided the shore supply system from the Controlled Track Switches (Mk3) (CTS) and the LCS2 Supply Disconnectors, through to the Road contactor Suites, to Trolleys & Pedestals (Supplied by others) to the train. This project provided maintenance and stabling facilities for the Southern fleet of Electrostar rolling stock at Brighton, Selhurst, Streatham, Littlehampton and Bognor.
Channel Tunnel Rail Link Spark Gap & Non Linear Resistor Enclosures
Completion of the CTRL Spark Gap resistor project was done in a very short lead-time. The project was designed, procured, built and delivered within 12 weeks. This allowed the principal contractor ‘AMEC SPIE’ to meet stringent targets.
The project comprised of 33 Spark Gap Resistor Assemblies and 12 Switch Disconnectors. LCS are continuing to supply the Spark Gap Resistors as the requirements are identified. A range of resistor values are now available to suit differing circuit conditions. All of the units are type tested.
Dublin Light Railway LUAS Project
Completed in 2003 with extensions in 2006, 2007 and 2009, LCS supplied all of the Substation Switchgear, Depot Switchgear, along with Trackside enclosures including switches and link boxes.
The variety of equipment comprised substation disconnectors and bypass on load disconnectors, depot contactors, overhead line disconnectors and negative bonding disconnectors, trackside on load disconnectors, configuration link assemblies in a variety of types of enclosures; steel zinc sprayed outdoor, steel indoor and GRP outdoor.
